Singin' in the Rain Movie Review - Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor by David Terr

"Singin' in the Rain" is a fabulous MGM musical from the '50s concerning Hollywood in the late '20s. The movie stars Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor. All do a terrific job in this picture. The singing and dancing are excellent, especially Kelly's performance of the title song. The story is also very entertaining and amusing.

Don Lockwood (Kelly) and Lina Lamont are a famous acting couple in the 1920s. Although they can't stand each other in real life, they make several successful love story pictures together and in the eyes of the public they're in love.

While running from his fans one night, Don runs into an attractive young woman named Kathy Selden (Reynolds). She is very nasty to him when they first meet, but he falls for her in any case and eventually they fall in love.

Meanwhile, Don's studio is in trouble, because of the advent of talking pictures. Due to the enormous success of "The Jazz Singer", the first full-feature talking film, all the studios in town are rushing to make talking pictures, giving diction lessons to the actors and actresses. Don and his friend Cosmo have no trouble with their lessons, but Lina proves to be a disaster. As a result, The Dueling Cavalier, the first talkie Don and Lina star in, is a major flop.

Don, Cosmo, and Kathy struggle to figure out how they can rescue Don's career. Cosmo comes up with the brilliant idea of dubbing Kathy's voice for Lina's in The Dueling Cavalier. Don also decides to add some elaborate musical numbers. As a result, they fix the picture and it becomes a success. However, Lina becomes enraged when she learns that Kathy's voice is dubbed over hers. She decides to make Kathy dub the voice for all her pictures in the future without getting credit, threatening to sue the studio unless they comply.

Following a showing of The Dueling Cavalier, Lina decides to speak to the audience, who's never heard her horrible voice before. When they hear her, they ask her to sing. Don tells Kathy to dub over her voice behind the curtain, and she reluctantly agrees, threatening to quit afterward. But as she sings, Don and Cosmo draw the curtain to reveal Kathy singing behind Lina. As a result, Kathy becomes the new star and she happily reunites with Don.
