Coins that collectors purchase to place in their collection represent pieces of history that are intertwined with romance. They represent a timeless beauty of many cultures in todays society and societies of the past. Romance in coins is mostly in a literal sense, but has been documented on certain coins that collectors call love tokens, which have been totally smoothed down on one side and then some sort of sentimental statement has been engraved upon it. It is thought that these sentimental statements were from soldiers that were going off to war and were giving the coin to their sweetheart to remember them by, but we may never really know.
