Hero Worship - Michael Turner and Marvel Comics

This one is more of the sad story for comic fans. Michael Turner, one of our most gifted comic artists, was born in Tennessee in 1971 and died of cancer in 2008. He was only 37 years old. Turner, a former pre-med student at the University of Tennessee, moved to Aspen before graduating, then on to San Diego. He taught martial arts while in California and was discovered by the comic world at the age of 22 when he took an art portfolio to a San Diego Comic-Con. His first work was doing backgrounds for Top Cow, then he was given a three-part project called "Ballistic." His work was so good that he was given extensive work on other Top Cow projects, including his own co-creation Witchblade, as well as Fathom and Soulfire. In 2000, he learned he had a form of bone cancer. In 2002 he left Top Cow to start his own comic book company, Aspen. In 2004 he did work on Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and a prodigious number of covers for both DC and Marvel Comics. The cancer finally took him in 2008. There are five of these Michael Turner salutes. This is a collection of his work with such Marvel Comic stars as Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Iron Man. It is accompanied by a video featuring his beautiful art for Fathom, another to examine his work at DC Comics, and one devoted to his early work for Top Cow, and finally a video examining the many kinds of art work done over the years. Music is Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major," performed by Northstar.
