Comic Con Introduces Top Movies
by Aydan Corkern
Ever since the 1970s, there has been one major event in San Diego that not only validated the comic book's place in American pop culture, but has served as the proverbial Mecca of pop culture. That event is the San Diego Comic Book Convention, or, as it is more affectionately known, Comic Con. Comic Con has been, for years, the place where movie developers, comic book companies, and all sorts of other entertainment venues go to showcase what will be the next wave of their respective products. Here are some of the milestones that have been a big deal at Comic Con.
1.Star Wars. You probably have not heard of this movie, but it apparently has a devoted following of fans. Of course, that is a joke as Star Wars is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest franchise in movie history. In 1977 George Lucas and his group who did the original classic film debuted footage and artwork at Comic Con, which may have been a key element in building up not only the film's popularity, but Comic Con's as well, because ever since, Comic Con has been where filmmakers showcase their latest and greatest.
2.Iron Man. In 2007, director Jon Favreau debuted the trailer for his critically acclaimed superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character. The film featured a star studded cast, including Robert Downey Jr. in the title role. The film was a massive success and was just the comeback that Robert Downey Jr. needed.
3.District 9. Neill Blomkamp directed the original short film entitled Alive in Joburg, and Peter Jackson was impressed enough to produce a full length film based on the short. The movie is now one of the most hotly anticipated films of 2009, and Blomkamp screened the film at Comic Con to much praise and enthusiasm.
4.Avatar. Avatar is a new film from director James Cameron. The story and special effects of the film have been heavily guarded, but the film is set to be one of the biggest science fiction films of the year, if not the biggest film of the year.
And so Comic Con has solidified itself as the destination to go every year to learn about the forthcoming trends in almost all things entertainment related, and as such, it has proved to be a staple of the entertainment industry, and will be for many years to come.
